The victim of the Short Hills mall shooting has been preliminarily identified as a 30-year-old patent attorney from Hoboken.
Two law enforcement sources said that Dustin Friedland was shot in the head and died Sunday night at Morristown Medical Center.
The sources, who are familiar with the investigation but were not authorized to speak on the record, verified that Friedland was the victim of a carjacking. He and wife were shopping at the Mall at Short Hills on Sunday night.
The couple was attacked by two assailants in the parking deck when they returned to their car, a 2012 silver Range Rover with the license plate U26BVD.
The attackers sped off in the stolen car, heading east on Route 24 after shooting Friedland. His wife was uninjured, according to acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray.
Anyone with information regarding the shooting or the whereabouts of the suspects is urged to call the tips line at (877) 847-7432.
Friedland was a project manager at a legal firm, Epic Mechanical, according to a LinkedIn social media profile. He received his law degree in 2009 at Syracuse University, according to the LinkedIn page.
